Bed construction: what do the frame, slats and mattress do?

Prepared by Denora.

Bed construction with the frame, base and mattress labelled separately
Bed construction: the frame surrounds the sleeping area, the base supports the mattress and the mattress itself is a separate component. This is a general diagram, not a technical drawing of a particular model.

In brief

  • When choosing a bed, check the frame, mattress base and mattress separately.
  • Slats are one type of mattress base. The word base alone does not explain its construction.
  • A mattress shown in a photograph is not necessarily included in the displayed price.
  • A storage compartment is intended for storage; it is not a substitute for the mattress.
  • Check compatibility using the information for the specific model rather than relying only on matching widths.

What does each part do?

The frame is the body of the piece of furniture, the mattress base supports the mattress and the mattress forms the sleeping surface. These parts may be sold together or separately. The word bed in a product name is therefore not a complete list of the included components.

Part Purpose What to check on the product page
Frame Surrounds the sleeping area and holds the bed structure together External dimensions, materials and included components
Mattress base Supports the mattress Type, dimensions and the manufacturer's conditions of use
Slats A slatted mattress base Whether they are included and suitable for the selected mattress
Mattress Sleeping surface Exact model, size and compatibility requirements
Headboard The part of the bed positioned behind the sleeper's head Whether it is included and how it should be attached according to the instructions
Storage compartment Storage space beneath the mattress base Whether it is present and how it is accessed

Not every bed has all the parts listed in the table. For example, it may have no storage compartment or separate headboard. The table helps you understand an offer; it does not describe a mandatory structure for every bed.

Why are the frame and mattress base not the same thing?

A frame can look complete even when the mattress base still needs to be selected. Before ordering, look beyond the photograph of the bed body and find the list of included components. It should clearly state what will support the mattress.

Look for the frame, mattress base and mattress separately in the offer. For each part, it should be clear whether it is included or available as an additional option. A general bed name does not explain these differences.

What a bed consists of: frame, mattress base and mattress shown as separate layers
What does a bed consist of? Separate layers help distinguish the bed body from the mattress support. The headboard and storage compartment depend on the particular model.

What should you check when slats are specified?

The phrase with slats is not enough to conclude that any mattress will fit. First compare the dimensions of both products. Then read the mattress manufacturer's requirements for the base and the bed's instructions for use.

If the description does not contain the necessary information, ask for it before buying. Do not invent a supposedly universal gap between slats, load limit or number of additional supports. These decisions must be based on the specific products you have selected.

This guide is not an instruction manual for making slats or repairing a bed. If you want to alter the structure, discuss the solution with the manufacturer.

How should you read the contents of a specific bed offer?

The Denora single bed in this example has a slatted base, upholstered headboard and storage compartment with a gas-lift mechanism. The product page also offers a separate choice of recommended mattress. These are two different groups of information: the construction of the bed and the selection of an additional product.

Here is what we check in this model's description:

Question What the product information confirms What cannot be determined from the image alone
What type of base is used? Slats are specified for this model All technical parameters of the slats
Is there a storage compartment? A bedding storage compartment is specified That storage compartments are identical in every model
How is it accessed? A gas-lift mechanism is specified Whether any mattress is suitable for the mechanism
Has a mattress been selected? There is a separate choice of recommended mattress The final contents of the shopping cart

The table is based on publicly available product information. We did not dismantle the bed or perform laboratory testing. Before ordering, check your selected option and shopping cart because a product photograph alone does not confirm what your order includes.

How can you distinguish construction from included components?

Construction explains how the furniture is built. The list of included components explains what you will receive when ordering the selected offer. For example, a description may explain which mattress is compatible with a bed, but that does not mean the mattress is included in the price.

Before buying, write down the frame, mattress base, mattress and additional parts separately. Mark each one as included, available as an additional option or unclear. Ask the retailer to clarify the third category instead of replacing missing information with an assumption.

Bed components: the body, support, sleeping and storage elements shown separately
Bed components have different purposes. This checklist helps you find each component separately in the offer without treating the photograph as a list of included items.

Frequently asked questions

Are the bed frame and mattress base the same thing?

No. The frame is the body of the piece of furniture, while the mattress base supports the mattress. They may be sold together or separately.

Are slats always included in the price of a bed?

Not always. Check the components included in the specific offer and any selected options.

Does a mattress in the photograph mean it is included?

No. The photograph shows how the furniture may look, while the list of included components and your selected shopping cart confirm what you will receive.

Does a storage compartment replace the mattress base?

A storage compartment is intended for storing items. Check the construction of the specific bed to see how the mattress is supported above it.

Can I fit any slats to my existing frame?

A similar size alone is not enough. Check the attachment points, supports and the requirements of both the bed and mattress manufacturers.
